Using photography – a medium which according to Walter Benjamin has lost the aura of a work of art – the Japanese artist Daisuke Nakayama creates a picture series of auratic power: Against a white background, without any reference to a real sports arena, he withdraws his fighters from the field by blurring the image, elevating them to the horizons of the human condition: Rather than concentrating on the superficial reality of winners and losers on the stage of athletic competitions, the focus here is on the archaic essence of victory and loss, as encountered in every human life. |
